A Sneak Peek into ‘The Simpsons’ Season 38: Expect Gangster Movies and ‘70s Musicals
Last Sunday, The Simpsons kicked off its 38th season with “The Children’s Book Job,” and we’ve got some exclusive details with what’s coming up later this season.
We recently sat down with Simpsons co-executive producer Michael Price to record a podcast episode about Star Wars and its long and winding history with The Simpsons. That podcast episode will come out around the movie’s 50th anniversary in 2027, but Mike told us about some upcoming movie parodies we couldn’t wait to share!
Mafioso Makeover: Fat Tony, Cultural Consultant
One upcoming episode will feature Goodfellas (1990) inspired scheme, where Springfield's resident mobster Fat Tony takes center stage.
In this episode, a mob movie directed by guest star Owen Wilson is being shot in Springfield. Never one to miss out on a lucrative opportunity, Fat Tony devises a bust-out scam, much like the Bamboo Lounge, to extort the production as its Italian American cultural consultant.
A Rock Opera Mash-Up
Here’s another fun tidbit that Michael Price shared with us: One of the upcoming Disney+ exclusives will be a musical! Price is working with Dan Castellaneta and Deb Lacusta to write this mashup of Ken Russell's Tommy (1975) and Norman Jewison's Jesus Christ Superstar (1973). These two seventies movie musicals helped define the rock opera genre and the concept album to stage musical pipeline.
JCS is also a favorite of our co-hosts Nate and Adam, so expect an emergency podcast episode when this one drops!
Stay Tuned
If you want to dig into the movies behind The Simpsons parodies, whether from the latest seasons and from the classic era of the show, tune into the Springfield Googolplex podcast.
We just kicked off our own new season with a very special episode featuring Simpsons writer Jon Vitti talking with us about Martin Scorsese’s Cape Fear and his classic episode-long parody, “Cape Feare.” Enjoy!
